Cingular, HP Release GPS iPAQ

Submitted by: kirkland on Wednesday October 25th, 2006 at 09:33 PM EST

After a considerable delay, Cingular released a new HP iPAQ with Wi-Fi and GPS navigation today—but the arrival of the HP iPAQ hw6920/6925 isn't as groundbreaking as it may sound.

Probably more important than the device itself is Cingular's launch of the TeleNav driving directions service, available on the hw6920/5, iPAQ hw6515, Cingular 8125, and Palm Treo 650. Service plans cost $5.99/month for 10 trip requests or $9.99/month for unlimited use, above your data and voice plans.

Notably absent from the new iPAQs—and from all of Cingular's smart devices—is support for Cingular's new 3G HSDPA network, which gives broadband-like download speeds. Verizon and Sprint have had 3G handhelds available for more than a year now. High-speed data fans have been waiting for the rumored Cingular 8525, an upgrade to the existing 8125 Pocket PC, which may appear by the end of the year.
